Blurb:<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s 2048.\u00a0 Automation has stolen vast swathes of jobs, and the government pays everyone a no-strings-attached income, enough to live on, in order to keep the economy going.\u00a0\u00a0Society is split into those who can get jobs; engineers, managers, creatives, and those who cannot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Iva Brooksbank, Senior Investigator of the Enforcement Office, has made a career of taking down corporate moguls who flout the rules, and now she has Guy Strathclyde, CEO of Cybax Technologies, firmly in her sights.\u00a0 She\u2019s sure he\u2019s up to something, and races to find evidence that will stick, before her time runs out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu Banks, a world famous artist, uses her work to highlight the deep inequalities and injustices the world now faces, perpetuated, she thinks, by the relentless march of technology.\u00a0 But when she finds herself the object of Guy\u2019s affections, she has to decide if she can trust his intentions, or if he\u2019s just the same as all the other corporate big dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Excerpt:<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu flopped to the ground as she crossed the makeshift sprint finish line in the sand, her chest heaving as she tried to regain her breath.\u00a0 It was a glorious morning, even at this early hour, the sun reflecting furiously on the flat calm of the sea, playing about as the water moved gently up and down, slivers of silver light trying to fool onlookers into believing it could be warm.\u00a0 Tiny waves lapped lightly at the beach, the sound calming Lulu\u2019s exhausted body, helping her settle her racing heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Darling, you\u2019re a little distracted this morning,\u2019 said Bertie Baqua, her slight, Asian fitness instructor, as he caught up with her.\u00a0 He was renowned the world over and in great demand, but he and Lulu had been friends for years, Lulu having attended his classes before he was famous, their friendship secured on the dance floor of a dubious Salsa club in Brighton.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I opened my exhibition last night,\u2019 she replied, as though this were enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018And?\u2019 he replied, clearly requiring more.<\/span><\/p>\n

She thought about keeping Guy a secret, but knowing Bertie, he probably already knew.\u00a0\u2018And Guy Strathclyde came.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Did he indeed?\u2019 flounced Bertie, laughing with his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018He keeps asking me out,\u2019 she shrugged, as though this were obviously a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018And?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018And, I thought he was a typical corporate mogul.\u00a0 I mean, he was obviously given his job by his dad.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Which is frowned upon these days,\u2019 said Bertie, frivolously.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Which is illegal these days,\u2019 snapped Lulu, rolling over and propping herself up on her arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bertie raised an eyebrow and a shoulder simultaneously.\u00a0 \u2018Touchy,\u2019 he said.\u00a0 \u2018You must really like him.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t know him.\u00a0 But I was surprised about his opinions on certain topics.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018In a good way?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Yes.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Well, what\u2019s the problem then?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I just never thought I\u2019d even entertain the idea of dating someone like him.\u00a0 And I think he might be dangerous.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Isn\u2019t that a little prejudiced?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu rolled her eyes.\u00a0 \u2018Maybe,\u2019 she pouted, playing with the grains of sand between her fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018What harm can come from going on a couple of dates?\u00a0 If you like him, then great; you\u2019re not breaking any rules by dating him\u2026apart from ones you\u2019ve perhaps created for yourself for no good reason.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu huffed as she brushed the sand away.\u00a0 \u2018I suppose so.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018You\u2019re welcome,\u2019 he said, reaching down to help her up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018You\u2019re insufferable,\u2019 she said, refusing his hand and throwing a towel at him instead.\u00a0Bertie snickered, and didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0\u2018What now?\u2019 she asked, not understanding the joke.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Looks like you\u2019ve got company,\u2019 he said, nodding up the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu\u2019s head whipped round.\u00a0 \u2018Oh God,\u2019 she breathed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ll say,\u2019 said Bertie, nodding his head in approval.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guy reached their workout spot and held his hands up; they were full of coffee and paper bags.\u00a0 \u2018Hungry?\u2019 he asked hopefully.\u00a0 She paused, considering another refusal.\u00a0 \u2018Oh, come on,\u2019 he said, \u2018of course you\u2019re hungry; you\u2019ve been working out for ages.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Bertie nudged Lulu towards Guy.\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019ve got another client, so I really must be going,\u2019 he said, as though the breakfast invitation had also been extended to him, which of course they all knew it hadn\u2019t.\u00a0\u2018Have fun,\u2019 he said, suggestively.\u00a0He stuffed dumbbells, balls and elastics back into his bag, hoisted it over his shoulder, and headed back up the beach, throwing Lulu a double thumbs up, complete with accompanying indelicate head nod behind Guy\u2019s back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu ignored him.\u00a0 \u2018You\u2019ve been watching me work out?\u2019 she asked, not sure whether to be flattered or a little bit freaked out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guy laughed.\u00a0 \u2018Not really.\u00a0I\u2019ve been working in the caf\u00e9 up there,\u2019 he said, pointing to the beach\u2019s edge where a Chutney Caf\u00e9 stood, the chain that had gained supremacy when it innovated the old players out of the market by replacing humans with robots.\u00a0 \u2018They\u2019re not technically open yet, but the manager took pity on me and let me in early.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Charmed by your smile, no doubt.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I am very charming,\u2019 he said, flashing her his best grin.\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019m so glad you\u2019ve noticed.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n
